Diagnosis Q & A
How often do I need to see a dentist?
You should plan on seeing your dentist once every six months, or as needed for emergency visits or urgent care needs. Even if you have optimal oral health and a gleaming smile, you still need to schedule routine exams for diagnostic and preventive services.
A routine dental visit gives you the opportunity to go over any concerns you have about your smile, oral health, or jaw and chewing functions with your dentist. Between digital X-ray imaging and comprehensive dental exams, he or she can diagnose decay, gum disease, or other issues early on before conditions worsen.
What happens during a dental diagnosis visit?
Diagnosing tooth and oral health issues requires a physical exam, as well as an evaluation of your symptoms and previous medical history. Whether you have tooth pain, bleeding gums, jaw discomfort, or another type of oral health concern, your dentist spends time getting to know you as a whole person, rather than just treating a specific symptom.
Your physical dental exam can include:
- Probing your teeth or visible caries
- Checking your teeth alignment while biting down
- Examining your gums, tongue, and the back of your throat
By using digital radiography methods, your dedicated practitioner at Moberi Dental Specialists can see the inside of your roots, deep into your gum tissue, and even your bone structure. They may also use specialized dental instruments to check if your gums are pulling away from your teeth, which is a sign of gum disease.
How often do I need dental X-rays?
In most cases, you’re probably going to need some type of digital X-ray imaging with every six-month check-up at Moberi Dental Specialists. Dental X-rays are one of the best diagnostic tools your dentist uses to check for early warning signs of gum disease and hidden cavities.
If you’re generally healthy and have no issues with decay or gum disease, your dentist might suggest full X-rays every 24-36 months. In other cases, full X-rays may be required every 12-18 months if you do have problems that need monitoring.
More routinely, simple X-rays are sometimes administered during check-ups, such as bitewings to check for cavities. Emergency visits can include X-rays to diagnose issues like acute tooth pain or tooth trauma.
If you have tooth, jaw, or gum pain, it’s time to see the dental experts at Moberi Dental Specialists. You can request an appointment online, or call the office to book.
